The Galway senior footballers will have to forget about last weekend’s disappointing one-point defeat to Westmeath and refocus on the fresh challenge they face on Sunday when Meath visit Pearse Stadium (2.30pm).

The Westmeath footballers held a hugely successful fight night last Saturday week in The Mullingar Park Hotel to raise much needed money to fund their endeavours for the year ahead.

Pat Flanagan has been re-appointed manager of our senior footballers for another year. Despite gaining promotion from division three there has been some unease at our championship performances leading to speculation that his re-appointment was not a foregone conclusion.

Lightning isn’t supposed to strike twice but unfortunately for Westmeath footballers their dismal showing in Wexford was repeated in Casement Park last Saturday as they were put to the sword by an Antrim side.

Leaving Wexford Park after the debacle which condemned Westmeath to the qualifiers it was hard to be optimistic of our chances regardless of whom we would be pitted against in the qualifiers. The consensus was that no other county would mind playing us.

Westmeath footballers have a glorious opportunity of reaching this year’s Leinster decider despite a tough opener away to Wexford. The provincial draw has been very kind to them as they avoid the big guns of Dublin, Kildare, Meath, and Laois. If they can clear their first hurdle in Wexford Park tomorrow evening (Saturday) then they will face either Louth or Carlow in a semi-final. It is hard to look beyond a Louth win over Luke Dempsey’s men in that one and they would hardly instil fear in Westmeath.
